Painted canvas rugs, also referred to as floorcloths, have graced American and European floors for centuries. Before the advent of floorcloths, most floors in early American and European homes consisted of either bare compressed earth or unvarnished wood. In the early 1700’s, when textiles were no longer considered to be too precious, floorcloths became the primary floor covering for the early colonial home. Originally, floorcloths were imported from Britain, where production and use were already well established. However, after the American Revolution, the preference for British goods gave way to a nationalistic support of American made products. |
